DELIVERABLE: Custom 36-page children's magazine CLIENT: Air National Guard ROLE: Art Direction, Creative Direction, Content Strategy, Graphic Design, Production Management
Wheels Up was my first experience designing for children, and it was such a fun and rewarding process I almost didn’t want to go back to designing for grown-ups! This publication was produced for the Air National Guard and distributed to children whose parents were about to deploy overseas, in an effort to provide them with support throughout the deployment process.
My team at iostudio concepted and created this publication from scratch—down to creating the title “Wheels Up.” As the art director and creative lead, I started off by researching popular children’s publications and websites. We experimented with fonts—and font sizes for a young audience—and developed our own custom typographic and illustration treatments. I concepted custom map illustrations for the cover and interior spreads, and hired/managed freelance illustrators and photographers to create artwork for this unique audience. I even developed and contributed content for several sections of the publication.
The client was so thrilled with this publication, and it was such a success with the audience, that they immediately ordered additional print runs.
